Much Ado Books is an independent bookshop in Polegate, Alfriston, East Sussex. The outside has an old-fashioned look, with a post box which resembles a pile of books.
Within the shop’s gates but outside the main entrance are the first shelves of books the shop has to offer nestled in cabinets to protect them from the weather, particularly overnight.
Inside, the store sells a vast range of both new and second-hand books. New books, including the latest hardback releases are located on the ground floor.
Old, second-hand and collectibles — which include a selection of Folio Society Editions — are found on the second floor. It is here I found a lovely folio edition of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. On this floor there are also comfortable armchairs where you can, if you wish, take a seat and peruse the books before you make a purchase. The armchair is complete with a Virginia Woolf cushion because the shop specialises, in particular, in books – by or about – artists and authors from the Bloomsbury Group.
As well as books the shop sells stationery and cards. Including their very own ‘re-covered notebooks’. These are unique writing or drawing pads (with lined or plain paper), created using old book covers which would otherwise be thrown away. A great gift for book lovers if you’re not sure what books they already have.
If you’re in the area I would recommend a visit to this lovely bookshop, with a great range of books and a unique décor including; a lampshade made from old book pages which can be seen on the way up the stairs.
