What Pet Should I Get? is a book published after Dr Suess’ death after it was found in the author’s home by his widow in 2013.
Starring a reappearance of the two children from ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish’, who are now deciding what pet they should get. A big and exciting decision for a child, the story shows how important pets can be for children and also hints at Suess’ own love for animals (which is also added to at the back of the book).
Following Dr Suess’ typical rhyming and rhythmic pattern the book is a smooth and enjoyable read. Repetitive and nursery rhyme style writing mean this is another Dr Seuss we may one day be reciting off the top of our heads like Green Eggs and Ham.
The Illustrations are also typical of Dr Seuss’ unique style, and in the back of the book we are given images of Suess’ original drawings for the book found in his home.
The only disappointing part about the book is that it ends on a cliffhanger, however, some children may enjoy the aspect of guessing and deciding for themselves.
